SABIC CEO: We were able to reduce carbon emissions by 12.5% in 2023

Engineer Abdulrahman Fakeeh, CEO of the Saudi Basic Industries Corporation, said that SABIC was able to reduce carbon emissions by 12.5% in 2023 compared to the base year 2010, indicating that progress has been made in energy efficiency, in addition to our efforts to conserve water and support the circular carbon economy. Therefore, sustainability is part of our strategy at the company.

Regarding the role of polymers in clean energy, Fakeeh said during the Future Investment Initiative conference: “Polymers are an integral part of the renewable energy system. This is our reality today, and the future also looks promising for polymers, as we reach advanced research stages that include the use of nanotubes made of polymers, which can be an effective alternative to some of the materials currently used. Lithium also plays a vital role in supporting the transition to clean energy.”

“There is no doubt that the role of polymers in the energy community is vital and essential,” Faqih added, explaining that if we look around us, we find that 95% of any manufactured product or synthetic material contains chemical components, and 76% of these chemicals are used in the manufacture of polymers, making polymers an indispensable part of our daily lives.” Faqih explained: “It can be said that clean energy today depends on two main factors: renewable resources and reducing dependence on carbon from fossil fuels. This is where chemistry comes in, where hydrogen represents one aspect of it, while polymers represent carbon. There is a twin relationship between carbon and electrons, as electrons cannot be generated without carbon. These electrons that produce energy come from the sun, wind, and hydroelectricity, all of which require materials made of polymers. You cannot see any wind turbines without polymers, and no electrical cables without the insulators made from them, and solar panels depend on polymers that make them light and effective in conducting electricity.” On sustainability at SABIC, Eng. Abdulrahman Faqih said that sustainability is of utmost importance, pointing out that SABIC, which was founded in 1976 as a company committed to sustainability, sustainability is part of its identity, as it collects all excess gases, and benefits from what the government has invested in the gas system, to ensure that added value is achieved from this hydrocarbon, and to ensure that it continues its efforts to reduce carbon emissions continuously. He added: We must provide added value to our customers, and provide solutions that are consistent with their ultimate goals, and add real value to them. All our customers in the industry, especially those we deal with at “Sarvik”, also care about the environment, and work side by side with us to ensure carbon reduction in the chemical industry. We do this and will continue to move in this direction, because they appreciate the solutions provided to them by the chemical industry, especially what we provide at “SABIC”.
