Aramco decided to push its operations to realize net zero emissions, within less than 3-decade was a pivotal decision, and this decision was not taken within a short period of time, but was discussed, at length, and deliberated back and forth, at several decision-making echelons, the Senior Vice President for Technical Services, at Aramco, Ahmed Al-Saadi confirmed.
It has taken the board of directors a period that extended to about 18-month, until the final formula was reached, which gave us confidence to announce our ambition to reach net zero carbon emissions, in the 1st and 2nd phases, without ignoring the 3rd, he stated.
“Our strategy has been carefully developed and we have several basic tools to achieve it, which will push us towards reaching our goals, he elaborated.
The main tool will be carbon capture or sequestration and exploitation technology.
Such a technology has the potential to capture huge amounts of carbon dioxide, given the scale of our business, worldwide, he indicated.
Aramco has already started drawing up the engineering and design plans for the 1st project, “which will give us a significant increase in our carbon capture and storage capabilities, which will have a capacity of 7 million tons, annually, of carbon dioxide sequestered from our operations, and this is the but the 1st step in a series of consequent steps, he added.
Aramco’s work in this regard goes beyond engineering, he pointed out, highlighting that “As we began to consider, with the government, carbon pricing and the required incentives to ensure such a file to achieve the expected economic returns,” he stressed.
We are trying to approach this file from an innovative point of view, as we will not implement this project ourselves, rather attract investors to partner with them to build carbon capture and storage capabilities, as a service provided not only to Aramco but also to the entire industrial sector, in Saudi Arabia, because our ambition is to serve the Kingdom as a whole, in this regard, especially in the light of the large size of the industrial sector, and the big potential of the carbon emissions’ volume, in Saudi Arabia.
