24 Oct 2021

Badr Salem al Badraniy

Institutions and businesses in the private sector are researching the use of the work system, which includes reducing weekly working days to four instead of five, as part of the experience of the future of work, which aims to treat employee fatigue caused by long hours of work and work to allow them to balance work and personal lives. Additionally, the practice of reducing working hours during the week is being tested to see if it is more productive and gratifying for the company.

We may explore some global experiences and future trends of key private sector organizations throughout the world in this week’s post, all of which tried to reduce the number of working hours per week by reducing the number of working days per week.

“Unilever,” the world’s largest consumer goods company (beton, breakfast cereal, juice, and so on), announced that it would allow all of its employees in New Zealand to work only four days per week for a year on a trial basis while maintaining the same salary, and explained that the goal was to “improve productivity.” The goal is to “transform the paradigm of how we work,” not to increase the number of working hours throughout the four days.

As part of a trial study, the CEO of Kickstarter, an American financing firm based in New York, claims that he had to adopt remote work during the first phase of the Corona pandemic, and that he is now intending to allow his staff to work less hours over four days for the same wage. He believes that a shorter workweek will help individuals to better balance work and personal life, resulting in more output at a lower cost.

The internet behemoth will trial a flexible workweek in which staff will only come to work three days a week for “collaboration days.”

The company is also making adjustments to its workplace premises, including the addition of bookable collaborative spaces and outdoor meeting areas.

Ben Honeycutt, a University of Iowa professor and author of Work Without End, points out that in the job market, individuals quit their positions as employer rivalry for the best personnel grows, therefore the benefit of a shorter week may be used to attract employees.

CEO Lindsey Hahn of Metro Plastics Technologies claims that reducing working hours to six hours (without breaks) at his Noblesville, Indiana business in the 1990s helped the company avoid workforce shortages.

Dropbox announced in October 2020 that it had transformed into a virtual company, which means that approximately 3,000 employees will work remotely the majority of the time and will only come to the office for collaborative work, and the company is renovating its offices to facilitate this transformation, including removing individual offices.

Microsoft previously indicated that working from home for less than half the time would be considered “normal” for most professions, as well as a flexible schedule. combining commercial needs with ensuring that our culture is lived.”

Uncharted, a Denver-based organization, has started experimenting with a four-day work week by giving employees Friday off. Employees sought aid from their peers less frequently since they didn’t want to bother their coworkers in such a short period of time.

The tests were carried out by the Reykjavik City Council and the Icelandic government between 2015 and 2019, after unions in Iceland demanded shorter work weeks. They made it better. According to the Icelandic State and Municipal Workers’ Union, a shorter work week necessitated a cultural shift and the debunking of the notion that lengthy work hours lead to better performance.

Finally, the extended weekend was an important and motivating experience for students, male and female teachers, and teachers, and it is hoped that it will reduce absenteeism and dropouts, as well as be one of the most important tools for progress in academic achievement and international tests.
